TPL, Inc. Receives $3.7 Million in Defense Contracts

July 2004

TPL, Inc. has been awarded three barrel cladding contracts by the Department of Defense to continue development of its process of explosively cladding a refractory liner to the interior of the gun barrel. This technology, the recipient of a US Army SBIR Quality Award in 2001, substantially increases the resistance to corrosion and erosion, increases weapon life, and allows the use of higher performance ammunition.

The US Army's Manufacturing Technology Program has awarded TPL, Inc. a $1.9 million, three-year contract to develop its explosive cladding program for the 30mm machine guns being developed for the Future Combat System.

United Defense, LP which is managing the Navy's Advanced Gun System Program, has selected TPL's barrel cladding technology as one of two to be pursued in support of the new 155mm gun, to be deployed on the Navy's new destroyer, the DD(X).

The United Defense contract will also be supported by a Navy Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract. Combined, these last two contracts represent $1.8 million over the next 24 months.

TPL, Inc., a materials science-based technology development and manufacturing company, is noted for demilitarization of conventional munitions performed at Fort Wingate, NM as well as manufacture of dielectric materials and capacitance products at its Albuquerque location.

According to Paul Bryan, Vice President of TPL's Defense Systems Division, these three contracts position gun barrel cladding as TPL's third major business unit.

TPL, Inc. Acquires Microelectronics, Inc.'s U.S. Ceramic Capacitor Manufacturing Facility

July 2004

Rick Snow won Best Technical Presentation and Paper from The Joint Army, Navy, NASA, Air Force (JANNAF) Conference in Seattle that took place in July 2004. His paper "Reuse of Military Gun Propellants", highlighted TPL's and the Joint Demilitarization Program Office's work in recovering valuable explosives and propellants from the growing inventory of retired and outdated Government ordnance as alternatives to open air burning or detonation, which are costly, wasteful and have obvious negative environmental impacts. Blasting Gel Slurry Explosives and a Flashless Powder for use in military small arms ammunition are two examples that illustrate TPL's success in establishing programs that reuse gun propellants. TPL, Inc. Awarded New Mexico Technology Flying Forty

June 2005

Albuquerque based TPL, Inc., a leading producer of nano-sized Barium and Strontium Titanate Ceramic Powders, and other advanced dielectric materials for the electronics industry, has acquired the U.S. manufacturing facility, assets, and product lines from Israeli-based Microelectronics Group, Ltd.

This facility, located in San Diego, California, manufactures high frequency passive components for use in a variety of applications including civilian and military wireless communications, satellite TV, medical imaging, and global positioning systems.

"TPL, Inc. is very excited to now have component manufacturing capability into which we can introduce our nano-sized dielectric materials. The unique sets of properties that TPL's materials bring, along with the state of the art manufacturing we acquired, will allow TPL to expand the product offering into other markets needing application-specific components. High temperature, severe environment applications, such as oil and gas exploration, is an example of a market where our materials offer a significant improvement over commercially available dielectrics" said Hap Stoller, President, TPL, Inc.

The new company that has been formed, TPL Microelectronics, Inc., is a wholly-owned subsidiary of TPL, Inc. Kurt Haskell, TPL's Vice President of Capacitive Products, having over 25 years of executive and engineering management in the capacitor industry, will have the responsibility of managing the growth of this new enterprise.
